Laminate Flooring — Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between laminate and vinyl plank?+

Laminate has a photographic timber or stone image layer under a clear wear coat, bonded to an HDF core. Vinyl plank is solid vinyl throughout — fully waterproof. Laminate looks great but isn't suitable for wet areas. Vinyl plank can go anywhere.

Is laminate waterproof?+

Standard laminate is water-resistant but not waterproof — prolonged moisture exposure can cause the HDF core to swell. Some premium laminates have enhanced water resistance. For wet areas, we recommend vinyl plank or sheet vinyl instead.

What does AC rating mean for laminate?+

AC (Abrasion Class) rating measures durability. AC3 suits residential use; AC4 handles light commercial traffic; AC5 is commercial grade. For busy households, we recommend AC4 minimum.

Can laminate be installed over tiles?+

Yes, in most cases. Laminate floats on top of tiles — no adhesive required. We check for lippage (tile height variation) and install an appropriate underlay to level minor differences.

How long does laminate last?+

Quality AC4+ laminate in a residential setting typically lasts 15–25 years. Unlike timber, it can't be sanded — when the wear layer is gone, the floor needs replacing.
