Flooring FAQs

Common questions about flooring installation, products, pricing, and our services across Newcastle and the Hunter Region.

General

What areas do you service?+

DFO Flooring services all areas within 100km of Newcastle NSW, including the full Hunter Region, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Port Stephens, Cessnock, and the Upper Hunter. We also travel for larger commercial projects.

Do you supply and install, or just install?+

We do both — supply and install as a single service. You deal with one company from product selection through to the finished floor. No middlemen, no coordination headaches.

Can you bring flooring samples to my home?+

Yes — we offer a mobile showroom service. We can bring product samples directly to your home so you can see how they look in your own light and against your existing walls and furniture. This is far more useful than picking from a small chip in a showroom. Just mention it when you book your free measure and we'll bring a selection suited to your project.

Do you offer a free measure and quote?+

Yes. We provide a free in-home measure and written quote at no obligation. Call us or use the form on our website to book.

How long does flooring installation take?+

A typical residential room (30–50sqm) takes one day. Larger jobs may span 2–3 days. We'll give you a clear timeline in your written quote.

How much does flooring installation cost in Newcastle?+

Costs vary by product and floor area. Vinyl plank starts from around $40/sqm installed. Carpet and sheet vinyl are similar. Timber and laminate vary more by product. We provide free, no-obligation quotes.

Vinyl Plank

Is vinyl plank flooring waterproof?+

Yes — quality vinyl plank is 100% waterproof through the full plank. This makes it safe for wet areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries.

How long does vinyl plank last?+

Quality vinyl plank with a 0.5mm+ wear layer typically lasts 20–30 years in residential use. The thicker the wear layer, the longer it lasts.

Can vinyl plank be installed over tiles?+

Usually yes, depending on tile condition and height at doorways. We assess this during the free measure visit.

Does vinyl plank need underlay?+

Most products come with pre-attached underlay. Additional underlay can improve comfort and acoustics — we'll advise at the measure stage.

Carpet

Do you remove old carpet?+

Yes. We can remove and dispose of existing carpet and underlay as part of the installation job. Just let us know when booking.

What underlay do you recommend?+

We recommend 8mm–10mm foam underlay for most residential applications. Better underlay extends carpet life, improves comfort, and enhances acoustic performance.

Can carpet be installed on stairs?+

Yes — we install carpet on stairs regularly using professional stair rods and grippers to prevent loosening over time.

How long does carpet last?+

Quality residential carpet with good underlay typically lasts 10–15 years with regular vacuuming and professional cleaning.

Timber

What's the difference between solid and engineered timber?+

Solid timber is milled from a single piece — stable long-term, can be sanded multiple times. Engineered has a real wood veneer over plywood — better for humid climates and slab substrates, more affordable.

Can timber flooring be installed over concrete slabs?+

Engineered timber is well-suited to concrete slabs using glue-down or floating methods. We test slab moisture levels before recommending an installation method.

How long does timber flooring last?+

Quality solid hardwood floors regularly last 50+ years and can be sanded and refinished 5–8 times. Engineered timber typically lasts 25–40 years.

Laminate

Is laminate waterproof?+

Standard laminate is water-resistant but not waterproof — prolonged moisture can cause the HDF core to swell. For wet areas, we recommend vinyl plank or sheet vinyl instead.

What does AC rating mean for laminate?+

AC (Abrasion Class) measures durability. AC3 suits residential use; AC4 handles light commercial traffic; AC5 is commercial grade. For busy households, we recommend AC4 minimum.

How long does laminate last?+

Quality AC4+ laminate in residential use typically lasts 15–25 years. Unlike timber, it can't be sanded when worn — it needs replacing.

Floor Preparation

What is concrete grinding?+

Concrete grinding uses diamond-tipped wheels to remove material from a slab — eliminating high spots, adhesive residue, and surface contamination. It prepares concrete to the correct profile for new flooring.

Do I need floor preparation before new flooring?+

In most cases, yes. Most floor covering warranties require a substrate that meets flatness tolerances (typically 3mm over 1.8m). We assess this at the measure visit.

Can you remove old tiles from a concrete slab?+

Yes. We can remove tiles and residual adhesive using scarifying and grinding equipment, then prepare the substrate for the new covering.

Commercial

What types of commercial flooring do you install?+

Commercial vinyl sheet, vinyl plank, safety flooring, carpet tiles, entrance matting systems, and floor preparation. We work with Gerflor, Armstrong, Interface, Forbo, Polyflor, Altro, Tarkett, Shaw, and other leading brands.

Can you work in live hospital environments?+

Yes — it's one of our specialisations. We have extensive experience in active hospital wards, ED areas, and corridors, following strict infection control procedures.

How do we get a commercial quote?+

Contact us with your project details — scope, location, specification, and timeline. We'll arrange a site review and provide a competitive written quotation.
